The All Party Group (APG) on legal aid is delighted to announce its next breakfast meeting on access to justice for children and young people. The meeting will be held in the Jubilee Room in Parliament on Thursday 16 October 2014 from 8.30 to 10.00am.

Criminal legal aid JR successful

A judicial review challenge to the lawfulness of the government consultation on reforms to criminal legal aid was successful this week, as the Administrative Court held that failures in the consultation process were “so unfair as to result in illegality”. The case was brought jointly by the London Criminal Courts Solicitors Association (LCCSA) and the Criminal Law Solicitors Association (CLSA) against the Lord Chancellor, Chris Grayling.

DV gateway JR granted permission

On Friday permission was granted for a judicial review of regulations made under the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act setting out 'gateway' criteria for legal aid applicants to prove that they are victims of domestic violence.

Legal aid news - 10 Sept 2014

  • The judicial review of the government’s decision to impose a 17.5% reduction on criminal legal aid and reduce the number of duty contracts from around 1,600 to 525 was heard by the Administrative Court on 8 and 9 September. The case was brought by the London Criminal Courts Solicitors Association and the Criminal Law Solicitors Association. Judgment is expected in early October.

All Party Parliamentary Group on Legal Aid: Where to turn now for legal advice? Assisting constituents after the cuts to legal aid

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Legal Aid met on 3 September 2014 to discuss the effect of cuts to legal aid on access to legal advice. The APPG is a group of MPs and peers who meet regularly in Parliament to discuss and debate legal aid issues. It is organised jointly by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG) and Young Legal Aid Lawyers.

Next APPG on 3 Sept

The next meeting of the All Party Group on Legal Aid will be on Wednesday 3 September 2014 at 8.30-10 am in the Jubilee Room at Parliament. The subject of the meeting is "Where to turn now for legal advice? Assisting constituents after the cuts to legal aid". We will be joined by a number of speakers who will discuss the effects of the cuts. There will also be discussion of the Government's ongoing programme of reforms. This is intended as a drop-in event.
