A View From the Gravy Train is a new blog showcasing anonymous “a day in the life” stories submitted by legal aid lawyers. The purpose is to dispel the myth that legal aid lawyers are getting fat off legal aid.

Low Commission

Young Legal Aid Lawyers welcomes the publication of ‘Tackling the Advice Deficit’, a report produced by the Low Commission, which is calling for urgent reforms to ensure ordinary people can get the help they need to deal with employment, debt, housing and other social welfare law problems. The report, which was brought about in response to  widespread concern about the impact caused by the cuts to legal aid, looks at the effect of cuts in funding for social welfare law advice.

Legal Aid Mythbuster

We have produced a new and updated Legal Aid Mythbuster to correct common misconceptions and 'myths' about legal aid (which are often promoted by the government).

The Mythbuster addresses misleading spin about the cost of legal aid, the pay of legal aid lawyers, judicial review and comparisons between the legal aid system in England and Wales and other countries.


Cuts - where are we now?

YLAL has produced a one-page updating guide to show where we are now with the current round of proposed legal aid cuts. You can download the leaflet below. Please distribute amongst work colleagues and friends and send to your MP to let them know that the recent Government announcement does not go far enough to save UK justice.


Demo 6th Jan

Law Society SGM

The Law Society is holding a special general meeting (SGM) on Tuesday 17 December 2013 at 10.30 am.

The meeting was called to consider a motion of no confidence in the Law Society's leadership after 118 criminal defence lawyers questioned their actions to influence Government policy on cuts to criminal legal aid.
