MRCI (Dublin) - Legal Officer

MRCI is seeking applications for the position of Legal Officer. The role involves coordinating and advancing MRCI’s case work and promoting MRCI’s strategic policy concerns in the areas of employment, human trafficking and immigration law.

Reporting to the Workplace Rights Coordinator, specific tasks include:

  • Managing MRCI’s case work programme in the area of employment, immigration law and human trafficking
  • Supporting migrant workers to access their rights and entitlements through the provision of legal and advocacy support
  • Identifying and managing strategic cases that emerge in identified areas including test cases
  • Tracking and recording cases and advocacy through MRCI’s CRM system
  • Identifying new trends and issues and recommending appropriate responses
  • Analysing the collective outcomes of cases and inputting into policy recommendations of MRCI
  • Preparing submissions and providing representation on key cases at Workplace Relations bodies
  • Conducting assessments of human trafficking cases and preparing complaints for An Garda Síochána
  • Supporting and advocating for individuals experiencing forced labour including trafficking
  • Providing training and information to legal practitioners and relevant  stakeholders
  • Coordinating activities to raise awareness and capacity across key structures and institutions i.e. judiciary and legal profession
  • Supporting cases that highlight strategic policy impact
  • Preparing reports, articles and presentation on the work
  • Identifying and managing funding streams relevant to the strategic area of work
  • Participating in wider MRCI activities in line with strategic priorities
  • Representing MRCI at external events

Essential

  • Education to degree level in law, human rights, social rights, social policy or equivalent
  • Legal training and experience of advocacy in immigration and/ or employment law or related field
  • Working knowledge of Ireland's labour migration policy framework and legislation underpinning same
  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral
  • Commitment to social justice and the rights of migrant workers
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to prioritise tasks effectively
  • A self-starter, with an ability to demonstrate initiative and innovative, flexible and adaptable work approaches

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of Russian, Chinese or Arabic is an advantage
  • Experience of identifying and advancing strategic cases for collective outcomes
  • Experience in the area of forced labour and trafficking
  • Experience of advocating for/representing workers at Workplace Relations Commission
  • Experience of working with community sector organisations
  • Experience in the development and delivery of training
  • Familiarity of tracking cases through CRM systems and the generation of data to highlight new trends and issues
  • Experience of carrying out research and feeding onto policy and legislative development

Duration: This is a one-year fixed-term contract, 5 days per week. This position may be extended depending on funding.

Remuneration: €35,000 - €37,000 commensurate with experience
