Action for Refugees in Lewisham (London) - Advice Intern

Action for Refugees in Lewisham works to relieve poverty and isolation amongst refugees, asylum seekers and other ethnic minorities in Lewisham. Our commitment is to ensure we reach the most vulnerable people in our community and help them access the support they are entitled to. Good administration underpins the effectiveness of any organisation and your skills will be important to help us to achieve our aims.

When: The advice service is open from 9.00am-1.00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays (12-3) and Fridays (10-1pm).

Commitment: Minimum 4 hours per week for a period of 6 months

This position is to assist with the administration of the advice service. Duties will include:

  • Answering calls and taking messages

  • Maintaining office administration systems

  • Perform general admin duties

  • Welcoming clients and registering details

  • Maintaining case administration

  • Keeping client files updated on database

  • Continue to promote and assist in developing the advice project

  • Making a log of case studies based on clients helped in the advice service

  • Contribute to the newsletter and write accounts of the day

  • Provide case studies for the website and Annual report

  • Other relevant tasks to support the advice service


  • Commitment to the aims of AFRIL

  • Good written and spoken English

  • Familiarity with word processing and data systems

  • Good organisational skills

  • Good written communication skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Ability to work on own initiative

  • Previous admin experience (desirable)

Initially reporting to Manager of AFRIL, then to the advice worker.
