Community Links is an innovative east London charity, running a wide range of community projects for over 5,000 people every year. Based in Newham, we have 40 years of experience working with local people to support children, young people, adults and families. Through our national work, we share lessons with government and community groups across the country to achieve social change.

We are looking for a Debt Advisor to provide an effective and efficient debt advice service across the range of Community Links advice sessions. You will assist client primarily with high quality debt advice and casework support. Full details can be found in the job description and other responsibilities include:

·         Working with clients to co-develop sustainable household budgets.

·         Triaging clients for our ‘open door’ service.

·         Assessing the wider situation of the client and appropriately referring to internal and external support.

Salary: 28,000 pro rata (0.6)

Hours: 21 hour, per week, flexible

Overtime: N/A

Holidays: 29 per annum, pro rata

Overall purpose of the job

To provide an effective and efficient advice service across the range of Community Links advice sessions, within the aims, policies and principles of Community Links.

Duties and Responsibilities

·       Assisting clients with primarily high quality debt advice and casework support.

·       Working with clients to co-develop sustainable household budgets, by addressing cash flow, money management and maximising income.

·       Assessing the wider situation of the client and appropriately referring to internal and external support.

·       Delivering advice in the most appropriate way to clients, including face-to-face, over the phone or online.

·       Helping deliver our 'open door' service by triaging clients when they first arrive at Community Links and providing general advice including debt, basic benefits and basic housing issues.

·       Delivering training to clients to improve their understanding of basic advice to improve their ability to avoid crisis situations in the future.

·       Providing cover for other Advice Workers when required.

·       Meeting individual service level targets as set out by the Programme Manager.

·       Keeping accurate, auditable records of interactions with clients. Completing all necessary paperwork and uploading required monitoring information onto our IT system.

·       Reflecting on their work and sharing learning on needs of customers with their line manager and the Policy and Learning team to improve our service and/or lobby for wider change.



·       Promote good teamwork and positive lines of communication between all members of staff.

·       Work supportively with other members of the Advice Team, both paid and voluntary.

·       Abide by Health & Safety guidelines and share responsibility for own health and safety and that of colleagues.

This job description is intended to provide a broad outline of the main duties and responsibilities.  The post holder will need to be flexible in developing the role in conjunction with their line manager. The post holder may be asked to carry out any delegated duty or task that is in line with their post.

Person Specification – Advisor: Advice




Relevant experience

·       Proven experience of advice work in the category of welfare benefits and/or debt and/or housing.


Relevant skills/Aptitudes

·       Good IT and administration skills

·       The ability to manage a caseload to Legal Services Commission SQM standards

·       The ability to work effectively and supportively with people seeking

·       Excellent communications skills

·       The ability to make and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues, partners and volunteers

·       The proven ability to work well under pressure

·       Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan and prioritise own workload

·       The ability to contribute positively to the future development of the Advice Service

·       A flexible approach and the ability to work well in a mixed team made up of paid workers and volunteers


Education/Training/ Knowledge

·       A good working knowledge of welfare benefits and/or debt and/or housing advice

·       Have a good understanding of  the aims, policies & principles of Community Links
