Maternity Action (London) - Senior Legal Officer (Immigration and Asylum)

Maternity Action

We are seeking an experienced lawyer to lead our small team of lawyers and advisers working on maternity rights for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.  This is a new post.  The post will head up our Maternity Care Access Advice Service for women affected by NHS charging, which is OISC registered, and our Migrant Women’s Rights Service which provides second tier advice on housing, subsistence and access to healthcare for vulnerable migrant women.  The post will include work on strategic litigation and feed into our policy and campaigning to protect and strengthen maternity rights for women with insecure immigration status.

We are looking for an experienced lawyer with good knowledge of immigration and asylum law and, ideally, a good knowledge of public law; experience of team and line management; excellent communication skills; and the ability to communicate complex legal information to a wide variety of audiences in an accessible way.  The ability to analyse policy proposals from Government is essential and experience in policy and campaign development is desirable.

The post is for 21 hours a week and is based in our office at Old Street, London.  We are happy to consider flexible working arrangements during normal business hours, including home working.  Thursday is our core day for internal meetings. There will be face to face meetings in London and some travel outside London.

This post is open to women only (Equality Act 2010 Work Occupational Requirement Exception, Schedule 9 Paragraph 1).  This is because the role involves phone conversations with female service users, including discussion of sensitive health issues.

Salary - £36,000 pro rata.

Deadline - 5pm 24 September 2018
