On 8th February 2022, Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL) published its third and final report on the impact of Covid-19 on its members’ working lives. The report constitutes results from a survey that was conducted between 29th November 2021 and 20th December 2021 which we received 51 responses for. This report is an update and comparison to YLAL previous Covid-19 report, which was published on 25th May 2020.
Since lockdown began, only urgent hearings have taken place in magistrates' courts across the country - for example, bail applications.
However, some magistrates' court hearings such are trials are now recommencing in various courts across the country.
As junior lawyers, YLAL members working in crime are likely to be practising in magistrates' courts and YLAL is concerned about the safety of its members.
On 19th Feb 2020 YLAL Liverpool met in a cosy library at The Quaker Meeting house lit by fairy lights to discuss wellbreing and self care for those working in the sector.
Siobhan Taylor-Ward opened the meeting by giving some information about the resources available to lawyers, findings of the Social Mobility survey and JLD's wellbeing survey and also a bit about her experiences and how she has managed stress and pressure in the workplace.
With the General Election taking place on 12 December 2019, we need to put justice on the election agenda. With this in mind, we are launching a new campaign: #3Pledges4Justice.
We are asking all Parliamentary candidates to support 3 key pledges for a fairer justice system:
The Fight For Social Justice: Young Lawyers Making Change
We are delighted to be hosting our second joint conference with Public Law Project and the Legal Education Foundation's Justice First Fellows on Saturday 16 March 2019 at BPP Waterloo in London.
Justice Alliance Subgroup: Fat Rat Film in schools
Hopefully by now you will have seen the Fat Rat Film “Legal Aid Team” which was launched in April 2015. For anyone that hasn’t seen it, Legal Aid Team is an “animated superhero adventure film pitting three audacious lawyers against the evil justice minister, Chris Grayling”.
Social in London
It's this Wednesday 12 August 2015 at 6:30pm, and will be a good chance to wind down, have some nibbles, meet other YLALs, and hopefully enjoy some sunshine - we have booked the roof garden.
We hope that you can make it!
