Briefing for House of Lords debate

On Monday 7 September 2015, the House of Lords debated a motion of regret tabled by Lord Beecham concerning the further reduction of the fees payable for criminal legal aid work by 8.75% (on top of a previous cut of 8.75%). YLAL prepared the attached briefing which it sent to peers in which we expressed our concerns, particularly in regard to the inevitable closure of legal aid firms.

Endorsing the motion of regret, we expressed our “strong concerns about the impact of these Regulations both on access to justice and on junior lawyers”, as well as they way in which the Regulations were brought in.
