LAPG’s annual conference takes place this year on Friday 9 October at the Priory Rooms in Birmingham. The event will start at 9.15am and finish at 6pm. YLAL is pleased to be able to offer a limited number of free places (worth £225 + VAT) to any of YLAL members, current LSC training contract grant recipients and College of Law students. College of Law and the Legal Services Commission have kindly sponsored these free places once again.

The conference will include a keynote speech by Lord Bach, Minister for Legal Aid, workshops and refreshments.

YLAL will be hosting two panel discussions during the conference:

Workshop 1: Human rights update
Speakers:
Phil Shiner (Public Interest Lawyers) will talk about the Danny Boy inquiry — R (on the application of Al-Sweady and Others) v Secretary of State for Defence
Paul Troop (Tooks Chambers) will talk about control orders and secret evidence.
Martin Howe (Howe & Co Solicitors) will talk about the Gurkhas case.
Kat Craig (Christian Khan Solicitors) will speak about the case of Austin,a test case concerning the limitation of the police’s power to control demonstrators

Workshop 2: Career options in legal aid
Speakers:
Dr Adam Sandell (Matrix Chambers) will talk about what it is like doing pupillage and the skills you need to become a barrister.
Gwendolen Morgan (Bindmans LLP) will talk about completing a training contract in legal aid.
Kay Foxall, a trainee at Southwark Law Centre will talk about what is like training to become a solicitor in a Law Centre.
Sara Chandler, DIrector of pro bono at College of Law, will talk about pro bono work and how it can enhance your CV.

To be added to the reserve list:

Send an e-mail to info@younglegalaidlawyers.org with ‘LAPG conference booking request’ as the subject heading. Your e-mail should say:
– your full name
– contact telephone number
– the name of the training contract provider at which you are an LSC training contract grant recipient
You will not be added to the reserve list unless your e-mail contains this information.
We will e-mail you back to confirm whether or not you have been allocated a place. You will be required to produce a printout of that e-mail at registration at the conference.
Note:
(1)All those who are awarded a free place at the conference via YLAL will be required to attend the above two workshops.
(2)Please only apply for a free place if you will definitely be able to attend.
(3)Only one place may be booked per person.
