YLAL’s Response to the first Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 (SQE1) assessment results

Young Legal Aid Lawyers (‘YLAL’) implore the SRA, as our regulator, to take urgent and decisive action to address the concerning ethnic group attainment gap in SQE assessments.
With the release of the attainment data, a clear gap in attainment on the basis of ethnicity can be seen. While YLAL welcomes the appointment of the Universe of Exeter to investigate the reasons behind this ethnic attainment gap, there are many other concerns that deeply concerning. One example is the lack of effective action by the SRA to address the ethnic group attainment gap when the the SQE initial pilot studies already presented the gap.
